The Stinger Bug Zapper Review: How Well Does It Work?

Stinger Bug Zapper

Bugs are the bane of an otherwise blissful summer. Flying, buzzing, stinging nuisances can turn your otherwise delightful summer into a delight-less bummer. Fortunately, humanity has evolved to the point of technological innovation where we can greatly reduce or even eliminate the annoying presence of that semi-robotic class of creature: insects. You've certainly heard of bug zappers, but the question remains, how well do they work? This is precisely what we have set out to answer in our Stinger bug zapper review.

Today, many bug elimination techniques and technologies exist. With the internet at your fingertips you have not only all the options one could wish for in terms of product solutions to bug problems, as well as a plethora of folk remedies codified on the world wide web. Which ones work? Who can you trust? As we explored these questions in our Stinger bug zapper review, we found that while you have many options, many do not meet the standards set by the Stinger bug zapper.

We picked several types of bug zapper to compare with the famous Stinger model to see how they fared against our Stinger bug zapper review criteria. Our results were surprising, and we hope that by the end of this article you will not only have a great grasp of what makes a bug zapper stand out from the rest, you will also have a criteria for evaluating these types of devices yourself.

What Is the Stinger Bug Zapper?

Stinger provides several bug zappers, but for our Stinger bug zapper review we picked the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper as a baseline point of comparison. This model combines the technology of UV light, an octenol lure, and a clog-free kill grid to keep your entire yard free of pests.

The black light (also known as UV or ultraviolet light) attracts annoying insects like beetles, mosquitoes, moths, and flies, luring them right to their death in the zapper. This model can cover an entire yard of up to one and a half acres or 0.6 hectares. The grid that kills the bugs comes equipped with anti-clogging measures, meaning you won't have to be cleaning it after a few kills.

We loved how easy this model was to plug in. In terms of our Stinger bug zapper review criteria, it was both powerful (offering 5,500 volts of bug zapping power) and durable, being constructed from weatherproof plastic.

If you are worried that such a device might dole out unwanted shocks to the positive members of your yard community, worry no more! The Stinger BK600 comes equipped with a protective screen that prevents children, pets, birds and wildlife from getting the same shock that you have planned for the terrible insects plaguing your yard.

Stinger Bug Zapper Review and Specs

When it comes to features, the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper goes far beyond its purported triple function. Equipped with plug-and-go operation, this model is remarkably easy to install. It can cover up to 1.5 acres or 0.6 hectares, and it even comes equipped with two settings of power operation.

One mode allows the device to run for 24 hours, and another relies on a sundown sensor to automatically turn on at dusk and to turn off at dawn. This latter mode can greatly increase your energy conservation and preserve the life of your Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper.

The chemical lures last for about 30 days, and replacements can be easily obtained through the internet. You can even replace the bulb with a bulb type “A” also known as Model B24B. We loved that it comes with a 3-year limited warranty.

Pricing

If you are in the market for one of the entries listed here in our Stinger bug zapper review, you are likely going to pay between $40 and $80. The high end can easily cost twice as much as the low end when it comes to bug zappers.

However, do not rush off to buy the cheaper option. If a bug zapper does not work then it simple becomes a power-draining, ugly birdhouse that does not house any birds.

How It Compares

We picked a few similar products available on the market to see how they compare.

  • Aspectek 20W Electronic Bug Zapper

Ease of Use

It doesn't get easier than plug and play. The bulb and the chemical lures may have to be replaced at certain intervals, but this does not diminish just how easy this device is to get setup in your yard.

Assembly Time

Assembly time is close to nil when it comes to the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper. We were so surprised by the brevity that we spent the rest of the afternoon we had slated for installation simply enjoying our mosquito free yard.

Design Quality

For the most part, this is a solidly constructed device. We even like the way that it looks hanging in the yard. Some users have had trouble finding units that turned on, however. This is far from the norm, but enough to dock one star from this category as per our Stinger bug zapper review rubric.

Warranty

A three-year limited warranty helps ease concerns about the product not working. This represents the five-star standard.

Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer

Although it may sound like a freestyle rapping robot, “Flowtron” is actually one of the top names when it comes to eliminating insects from your yard. The Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer serves as a great point of comparison to the well known Stinger models of bug zappers. For one, its price clocks in a bit cheaper than the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper, yet it provides many of the same features.

For one, it shares a similar type of high efficiency, non-clogging killing grid. Theirs is even a proprietary technology unique to Flowtron products. The Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer uses a high efficiency killing grid and utilizes a single 15 watt high intensity ultraviolet bulb (which can be replaced by purchasing a BF-35 UV bulb if it dies). You can easily install a new bulb even without breaking out your toolkit.

Like the Stinger, it uses a USDA-approved octenol attractant, a proven mosquito lure, which is guaranteed to attract mosquitos to their death for 30 days. The polycarbonate construction is simply rugged. It provides a weatherproof casing that the manufacturer touts will not rust, fade, or crack in normal weathering conditions.

In terms of energy consumption, you will be happy to know that the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer operates for only pennies a day. This is great when compared to models we were forced to leave out of our Stinger bug zapper review due to their high energy consumption rate.

Ease of Use

Just like the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper, the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer could not be much easier to use. All you need to do is simply plug it in and turn it on.

Assembly Time

Assembly is quick and easy. Fortunately not too many products from Flowtron are taxing on the installer. Some bug zappers never get installed due to the frustration they can cause their owners.

Design Quality

The weatherproof construction is a huge plus, especially since nearly all bug zappers are designed for outdoor use. However, we find the look of the Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer to be inferior or more sleek models such as the Stinger BK600 3-in-1 Insect & Mosquito Insect Zapper.

Warranty

The Flowtron BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer comes with a two-year limited warranty. This is not as generous as the warranty offered by the Stinger company for their bug zappers.

Aspectek 20W Electronic Bug Zapper

Officially known as the Aspectek Upgraded 20W Electronic Bug Zapper, this model represents quite a departure from the earlier two models in our Stinger bug zapper review. For one, it does not hang like the others. The Aspectek Upgraded 20W Electronic Bug Zapper stands like a room heater or a box fan.

Some spaces lend themselves better to the low to the ground design of the Aspectek Upgraded 20W Electronic Bug Zapper, and if you find your insect pests hover lower to the ground, this could easily be the right choice for you.

This device controls flies, moths, mosquitos, and even other types of flying insects by directed them with not one, but two UV bulbs. But don't let this power frighten you, the Aspectek Upgraded 20W Electronic Bug Zapper comes equipped with a safety mesh to protect you, your family, and your pets.

Unlike the others we've listed so far, the Aspectek Upgraded 20W Electronic Bug Zapper is chemical free, meaning it relies on the light alone to lure insect pests to their death.

Ease of Use

While it is not difficult to install this device, it is slightly more complex than the hanging models. This device can either be strung up or left on the floor.

Assembly Time

Since it needs to be hung like a picture or placed on the floor like an Amish fireplace, it is slightly more complex than its competition.

Design Quality

If you've never used a product from Aspectek, this is a great representation of their work. High quality earns it five stars.

Warranty

This comes with a 1-Year Limited Manufacturer's Warranty. This one third of what is offered by Stinger bug zappers.

Black Flag BZ-40 40-Watt Outdoor Bug Zapper

Black flag outdoor bug zappers are the cream of the crop in terms of murdering bugs on the spot. Beyond a powerful electric current of 5500 volts, the zapper features a UV white light and Octenol lure with a 30 day release. The bug zapper will grab the attention of every bug within an acre of its station and zap them to another plane of existence.

But wait, the best part of this bug zapper is the one two punch of its energy saving abilities: 30% less power usage and 20% longer bulb life. That does not even cover the warranty: a full 5 years of bug squashing madness. This is a great deal.

Assembly Time

The product comes almost completely assembled, so there should not be more than a minute of unboxing until it's plugged in to the wall, killing bugs like a maniac.

Design Quality

The Black flag has 5500 volts of electricity coursing through it to kill all bugs with which it comes into contact. A blindingly bright ultra violet light attracts the bugs from everywhere, bringing them to your new house of destruction. This two part epoxy of bug death will have you covered for a full acre. Not to mention the eco benefits.

Warranty

If you break it or it goes haywire, the company will replace your bug killing powerhouse under the outstanding 5-year warranty.

Conclusion

Our choice for the best bug zapper on the market today was an easy one. The Stinger Bug Zapper works well for a long time with many added benefits and is therefore our top pick. It is easy to use, has hardly any assembly time and has high design quality.
